Free Visitor Guide

Waller County is one of the last great rural escapes in the Houston area. Just a short drive down Interstate 10 or US Hwy 290 will bring you through Waller County from Houston (download map) or request a full-sized four-color map.

Here you can visit a working farm complete with rides and attractions for all ages, tour a real winery, take a ride in vintage aircraft, watch a real county fair, get excited over a good old fashioned destruction derby, and step back in time to the civil war era. Seasonal Events

Waller County Fair

- one of the oldest and most entertaining events in Waller County. Since 1945 the Waller County Fair has provided fun and entertainment for the entire family. Built around the ongoing livestock shows featuring local high school FFA programs and 4-H clubs, each evening holds live entertainment, great food and rodeo fun.

The fairgrounds are located on FM 359 just south of US Hwy 290 and old Hempstead Hwy about 1 mile on the left.

Waller Freedom Festival

Start things off July 3, the annual Freedom Fest is a city-wide celebration at no cost to the public. Fireworks both days, great rides, food, and crafts.

Take US Hwy 290 west and exit Field FM 2920. Festivities at the new football stadium.

Watermelon Run For The Fallen

The purpose of this event is to remember each individual who gave his or her life serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Participants are asked to walk/run/roll a mile in memory of a fallen soldier that your knew or the soldier that will be assigned to you. Each participant will receive a shirt tag with the name of the military member for whom each individual will be walking/running/rolling for.

The event will begin at the Hempstead High School football field located at the intersection of 5th Street and Donoho Street, in Hempstead, Texas.

Liendo Plantation Tours

Soaring Club of Houston

Come out and enjoy gliders soaring around the beautiful countryside. Rides and training are also available. The club is a member of the Soaring Society of America (SSA).

A unique experience. You really need to come out and see one of Waller County's most visited attraction. It's much more than a gift shop, cafe and plant nursery. You just need to experience it for yourself. Located in Brookshire, about 40 miles west of Houston on Interstate 10.

Katy Prairie

The Katy Prairie is an ecologically vital tallgrass prairie and associated wetlands area west of downtown Houston. Today, the Katy Prairie Conservancy, a nonprofit land trust, has protected nearly 20,000 acres that are home to more than 300 resident and migratory bird species; 110 species of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles; 400 species of wildflowers and grasses and thousands of terrestrial insects and aquatic invertebrate species. The prairie's wide open spaces support farming, ranching, ongoing educational programs, and a variety of outdoor activities such as bird watching, hiking and hunting ... all while providing significant flood mitigation and water quality benefits downstream.

Peckerwood Gardens

Peckerwood Garden, the creation of John Fairey, located in Hempstead, Texas, forty miles northwest of Houston, is an outstanding repository of rare and unusual plants from the United States, Mexico, and Asia. Balancing artistic expression and scientific discovery, it fosters educational and scientific programs, and encourages greater knowledge and appreciation of horticulture. The garden was founded in the early 1970s and continues to seek and implement new ways to explore, research, document and make available diverse native species emphasizing counterparts from Texas and Mexico.
